The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and to the anniversary of Our Lord’s birth on Christmas.
As we gather around the Advent Wreath to light the first candle we ask God to bless us as we seek to bring the light of Christ to all we know. HOPE is the theme for the first week of Advent.

ADVENT SERIES: UNDERSTANDING THE EUCHARIST
During every weekend Mass this Advent, Fr. Paul and Fr. Carlos will lead our Parish into a deeper understanding of the Eucharistic Celebration. This weekend they will explain the holiness within the Introductory Rites of Mass. Below is reference information about this topic that you may find helpful. Next week the topic is the Liturgy of the Word, and the following weeks will be Liturgy of the Eucharist (Part 1 and Part 2). We pray that by understanding the Mass we become more at one with Jesus Christ as we prepare for his birth this Christmas.

2024 litúrgicamente hablando ... PREPARÉMONOS QUE YA VIENE.
Comenzamos nuevo año litúrgico y el Adviento es el primer tiempo litúrgico y su entonación es en que es un tiempo de esperanza, un recorrido espiritual, interior, para vivir con intensidad la presencia de Dios en medio de nosotros. Eso es la Navidad. Y el Adviento nos prepara, nos ayuda a tomar conciencia, a romper el ritmo ordinario y ponernos en alerta, en vigilancia, porque Dios va a venir a nuestras vidas, una vez más, a ver si de una vez por todas consigue hacerse un hueco en nuestro duro corazón. Y no queremos que nos encuentre dormidos, ¿verdad?
Mantenerse despierto y estar vigilante son actitudes fundamentales en las que debemos ejercitarnos siempre. Estar en espera y no cansarnos de confiar en sus promesas de venida y salvación.
¿Por qué velar? La razón primera es nuestra confianza en Dios. Así lo hemos dicho en la primera frase de la primera lectura de hoy: “Tú, Señor, eres nuestro padre”. Y más abajo lo hemos vuelto a repetir: “Señor, tú eres nuestro padre, nosotros la arcilla y tú el alfarero: somos todos obra de tu mano”. No es habitual atribuir a Dios el título de “padre” en el Antiguo Testamento, pero la situación de destierro del pueblo requiere una confianza total en un Dios Padre que se va a hacer responsable de su pueblo. Esa confianza es la fe. Velamos porque confiamos, confiamos porque creemos y creemos porque somos personas de esperanza, porque no nos conformamos, ni queremos dejar las cosas como están. Velar, en el fondo, es esperar, pero una espera activa, una espera de conversión, de ser conscientes de nuestros fallos, de nuestros pecados, y ponerles remedio, “no sea que el Señor venga inesperadamente y nos encuentre dormidos”.
Si esto lo aplicamos a la situación actual en la que vivimos, necesitamos un Adviento para que se haga presente una nueva realidad, y la vigilancia es la actitud fundamental. El evangelio insiste: “Miren, vigilen… velen… lo que les digo a ustedes, lo digo a todos: ¡velen!”. Si permanecemos dormidos, no tenemos futuro. A pesar de que “nadie invocaba tu nombre ni se esforzaba por aferrarse a ti”, a pesar de que no se cuente con Dios en nuestro mundo, nosotros seguiremos siendo LUZ, y seguiremos diciendo con el Salmo: “Señor, Dios nuestro, restáuranos, que brille tu rostro y nos salve”.
Vigilar es vivir atentos a la realidad. Escuchar los gemidos de los que sufren. Sentir el amor de Dios a la vida. Vivir más atentos a su venida a nuestra vida, a nuestra sociedad y a la tierra. Sin esta sensibilidad, no es posible caminar tras los pasos de Jesús. Por eso nuestra vigilancia pasa por una escucha más atenta de la Palabra de Dios, una vivencia activa de los sacramentos y un ejercicio práctico y esperanzador de la caridad hacia los hermanos que más sufren.
Hace falta el Adviento, hay mucho que esperar y mucho que hacer. Dios nos brinda de nuevo la oportunidad de esperarle, de acogerle. Vengan todos y preparémonos que ya llega , siempre llega. bendiciones y que aprovechemos este nuevo año litúrgico con fe y amor.
WHAT'S THE STORY BEHIND THE ADVENT WREATH?
The Advent wreath is full of symbolism about Christ and his coming at Christmas. The wreath is made of evergreen boughs, reminding us that the life of grace doesn’t falter with the changing seasons. It always remains fresh and new. Similarly, a circular wreath reminds us of the eternal, never-ending nature of God’s love.
Candles remind us that Christ is the light of the world, the One who “shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” We use four candles to represent each week of Advent. Traditionally they come in the liturgical colors of the season. Purple has historically represented penance and sacrifice. We see the same color for the season of Lent. On the third Sunday of Advent, however, we light a rose color. The priest will wear rose vestments at Mass. This is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. On the third Sunday of Advent, we’re roughly halfway through the season. The Church chooses the midpoint to remind us to celebrate in the midst of our anticipation! Whatever the color and whatever the day, the Advent wreath is a beautiful practice to focus our attention on Christ’s coming at Christmas. ©LPi

Tis the season of busyness, so the Children and Family Evangelization (CAFE) Ministry is offering parents wonderful childcare services on Sat, Dec. 9 from 5 PM to 8:30 PM. The children will have dinner, crafts and games while parents have the night out.

◆ ST. MARGARET’S CENTER’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM 2023
St. Margaret’s Center, a program of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles serves families who live in poverty and reside in the greater L.A.X. area (Lennox, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Lawndale, South L.A. or South Bay).
They are in need of toy donations for their annual Christmas Program event, preparing a magical day for approximately 1,000 low-income children and their parents. Please bring your UNWRAPPED NEW toys to the back of the OLG church (preferred gift range from $15 to $30) by December 10. Also, we are looking for a few volunteers with trucks to deliver these toys on Monday, December 11.

EUCHARISTIC CARAVAN
The fire is spreading! In May 2024 there will be a Eucharistic caravan of pilgrims walking closely with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament across America to gather at the National Eucharistic Congress. For us who live on the Pacific Ocean side of the U.S., the route begins in San Francisco and then crosses the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains on foot, covering over 2,200 miles! Join many others in this Eucharistic Procession Experience like no other.

BOB CLARK, an OLG parishioner passed away last weekend in Texas. He was an alumni parent of four kids at OLG and was involved in ministry as a lector. May he be welcomed into the eternal banquet with God in heaven.

Many hands make light work! Volunteers are needed at the next Pregnancy Help Center Baby Boutique, where donated used baby items are distributed to our clients. Saturday, Dec. 9th at South Bay Church of the Nazarene, 700 Maple Ave, Torrance. We need help with setting up from 9:00-12:00 and clean up from 3:00-4:00. Garden of healing for victim-survivors of sexual abuse
With the continuing support of Archbishop José H. Gomez, the third garden of healing in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles dedicated to victim-survivors of sexual abuse was recently dedicated at Saint Francis de Sales Parish in Sherman Oaks. These gardens are a manifestation of our ongoing care for and support of those impacted by sexual abuse in all its forms. The other two gardens are located at St. Camillus Center for Spiritual Care in Los Angeles. (San Gabriel Pastoral Region) and Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Ventura (Santa Barbara Pastoral Region). The Archdiocese encourages anyone with information regarding sexual abuse to please make a report to law enforcement and/or the Office of Victims Assistance Ministry at (800) 355-2545 or protect@la-archdiocese.org.
